Hindu Wedding Card: What to Include and How to Choose
A short guide for Tamil Hindu families choosing a wedding invitation, from the Pillayar suzhi to how many cards to order.
1. The opening
Most Tamil Hindu invitations begin with the Pillayar suzhi (உ), followed by the name of the family deity or a line such as "ஸ்ரீ விநாயகர் துணை". Many families also print a small image of Pillayar, Murugan, Balaji or Meenakshi Amman. Our Hindu wedding cards have space for this at the top.
2. The muhurtham details
Give the Tamil year, month and date, the English date, the day, nakshatram and lagnam, and the muhurtham time. Confirm these with your priest before you send the wording.
3. Names and order
The order of names (groom's side or bride's side first) and the honorifics differ between communities and families. Tell us your custom and we will follow it.
4. Choosing the card
- For close family and VIPs: padded, laser-cut or box invitations.
- For most guests: folder or single cards in the same theme.
- Colours: maroon, red, yellow and gold are traditional; ivory and pastel shades suit modern weddings.
- Themes: temple gopuram, Pillayar, peacock, kolam and floral designs are the most popular in Madurai.
5. How many cards to order
Count families, not people. Make one list for each side, add 10 to 15 percent for last-minute guests and keep a few for the temple and close relatives' homes.
6. Timeline
Choose the design about two months before the wedding. Standard designs are usually ready 7 to 10 working days after you approve the proof. Start distributing cards 3 to 4 weeks before the wedding; outstation guests first.
